Course Description

It is important that today�s farmer/owner of any animal is familiar with the normal vital signs of his animals so that they can recognise health and ill health. The earlier a farmer/owner can treat sick animals the better, as the damage done by illness can be considerable.

This course will detail how to observe the vital signs, natural habits and behaviour of your animals.

    Feeding
    On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:
  • Introduce and discuss the various aspects of feeding.
  • List and explain the three food groups.
  • Discuss the Importance of water In the feeding process.

    Bones
    On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:
  • Examine the structure and formation of bones.
  • Identify and describe five types of bones.
  • Describe a freely moveable joint showing where it can be located.

    Health and Ill-Health
    On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:
  • Discuss the characteristics of a healthy animal and examine indications and causes of ill-health.
  • Summarise the importance of knowing the causes of ill-health.
  • Evaluate ways of detecting illness in an animal.

    Carriers of Disease
    On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:
  • Discuss methods of prevention, control and treatment of diseases in animals.

    Ticks and Dipping
    On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:
  • Examine the life cycle of a tick giving the methods used in their control.
  • Identify why ticks are considered a problem to animals.
  • Explain the meaning of a �resistance ladder� for acaricides.

    Disease Control
    On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:
  • Introduce and explain the different types of immunity showing the role that vaccines play.
  • Identify four types of immunity showing in what way they are different.

    Disease Control (continued)
    On successful completion of this module the candidate will be able to:
  • Discuss in brief notifiable diseases and explain the process of quarantine.
  • Summarise how you would treat an animal diagnosed with a disease.
  • Describe at what point quarantine should be used and identify precautions to be taken to stop diseases spreading.

    Prerequisites/Audience There is no experience or previous qualifications required for enrolment on this course. It is available to all students, of all academic backgrounds.
    Requirements/Materials Included This program can be accessed and completed using either PC or Macintosh computers. You'll need an Internet connection of 28Kpbs or higher, and a Web browser. There are no required textbooks.
