Course Description
Program learning objectives are:
Enhance your knowledge of family systems theory and its application to the counseling process;
Increase your understanding of how to identify patterns of family interaction that are associated with adolescent behavior problems and substance abuse; and
Extend your knowledge of how to plan interventions that target and provide practical ways to change maladaptive patterns of family interaction.
This program introduces counselors to concepts that are needed to understand the family as a vital context within which adolescent drug abuse occurs. It also describes strategies for creating a therapeutic relationship with families, assessing and diagnosing maladaptive patterns of family interaction, and changing patterns of family interaction from maladaptive to adaptive. Topics include basic theoretical concepts of brief strategic family therapy, diagnosing family system problems, orchestrating change, and how to engage resistant families.
