Course Description
Paralegals, like attorneys, must be knowledgeable of the rules of ethics. This course covers the basic principles governing the ethical practice of law for both lawyers and paralegals. Subjects explored include the unauthorized practice of law, conflicts of interest, confidentiality, paralegal-client relations, disciplinary procedures, fee splitting, billing, advertising, and misconduct in the law office.

Objectives:

Quizzes and Tests
All students are required to take a final test during the final week of the course. Tests are administered in the online classroom, and all answers must be submitted by the last day of class.

Grading is calculated as follows:

- Assume that people do not have a clear understanding of what a paralegal may or may not do.
- Never breach confidentiality.
- Know what legal advice is and don’t give it.
- Never make contact with an opposing party in a legal dispute.
- Disclose inexperience.
- Don’t sign your name to anything if you are not certain that what you are signing is 100% accurate.
- Never pad your time sheets.
- Know the common rationalizations for unethical conduct. Promise yourself that you will not allow these rationalizations to entice you to participate in unethical conduct.
