Course Description
This case study reviews a change of teaching delivery in a module on mathematical methods operating within the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Central Lancashire. The original delivery was through conventional teaching based around lectures and tutorials. The new self-managed study version relies on a combination of self-study booklets, videos, worksheets and tutorials.
The projects primary aim was to encourage students to learn more effectively by developing their own learning skills. This aim is seen in the context of the increasing variability of student backgrounds and a decreasing unit of funding.
The study explains how the innovation arose and the philosophy behind its various components. The components, how they were produced, how they interlink and how they were funded, are described in detail.
The module has operated (in our view successfully) in its new format during1993/94 and 1994/95. We review the results obtained by considering student feedback and module statistics, as well as by expressing our personal views.
We make no claims to being pioneers: the basic idea has been used elsewhere. Nor are we over-committed enthusiasts. However, we do hope that the case study will encourage colleagues to consider the potential of this approach and we offer our experiences for consideration.
Tutor Support
With this course you will have unlimited access to your own personal tutor who specialises in their field of study. It is your personal tutor's role to ensure that you receive constructive feedback and to deal with any queries you may have. You are more than welcome to telephone, fax or email your personal tutor.
You will also have access to a dedicated and friendly team of administrators and course advisors who offer sound and professional guidance and advice when you need it. This ensures that you will never feel neglected and that you will always succeed!
